Seizing the Skies

The story of the R101 airship disaster, the people who flew in her and the people left behind.
On October 4th 1930 His Majesty's airship R101 slipped the mast at the Royal Airship Works and set course for India. Less than eight hours later she hit the ground near Beauvais in Northern France. Forty eight men died in the explosion. For those left behind, life would never be the same again. Within days of the disaster the newspapers were telling stories of an airship that was unfit to fly. The play attempts to understand the motives of the men who flew in her and the impact the disaster had on the community that was left behind.
